Recent years have seen esports explode in popularity. The ESL have lead the charge in making professional gaming a reality for gifted gamers.

FPS games have been one of the most popular genres in this emerging competitive field. While competitors have long found their home on PC this is starting to change. Which is why Gameloft is in partnership with the ESL to bring Modern Combat 5: Blackout to the esports scene.

It is really exciting to see Modern Combat enter this arena. Gameloft’s first-person shooter franchise is one of the longest running on mobile, and it looks fantastic. More importantly, the development team behind this FPS is always working to keep the fast and skill-based multiplayer fresh.

Updated for better matchmaking

To help with this, Modern Combat 5: Blackouts’ recent updates have introduced a host of new features. These have been designed to help those wanting to compete in and watch these hard-fought matches. Patches have added custom lobbies that allow you to set your own rules for matches and invite specific players.

Modern Combat 5: Blackout’s esports league is already up and running. Designed to find the best players from around the world, the competition offers the chance to win weekly and monthly prizes.

Weekly and monthly prizes

Separated into Red and Blue Go4 Cups, teams compete in 5on5 matches on iOS, Android (sponsored by Mobcrush), and Windows. On iOS and Android each weekly cup has a $150/€150 prize pot, while the monthly finals provide $750/€750 to the winners. On Windows players still compete for in-game rewards.

It has been going fantastically. Just check out August’s commentated event and this interview with Accurate, leader of the winning EMP clan.

Getting better all the time

But our group of esports organizers want to keep making it better for both players and spectators. The hope is to continue to grow the Modern Combat events with the ESL, eventually bringing players from all over the globe together to face-off and decide the best.
